I love the visual of this. I also like the feeling you get when you are told something is ending. Do you decide it’s ended, or do you need to be told?
THE END.
great texture!
black plastic shopping bag — part of a series exploring textures n patterns of consumerism. these shopping bags range from the 70s to the late 90s. purpose is to explore the wrinkles n seams of these bags as if they were a landscape.
We have developed certain standards of what is acceptable to transmit via other peoples senses, we have certain “rights” when it comes to what we should not be exposed to. For most of the five senses, it is pretty obvious when someone is out of line, but it is not so with the sense of smell.
Sight: It is not socially acceptable for me to walk up to you on the street, and expose you to a disturbing picture. It is also illegal.
Hearing: It is not socially acceptable for me to blast loud music into your ears, unless it’s at some party. It is also illegal.
Touch: It is not socially acceptable for someone to touch someone without their permission. It is also illegal.
Smell: huk!?
Obviously I have not included taste as that is rarely applicable. Of course, it is not cool for a cook to prepare bad food or piss in the soup, etc, but professional ethics are not what we are discussing here.
My question is, why is it that we have not developed any strict social standards when it comes to how it is acceptable for someone to transmit scents to you?
1. The scent of what leaves you swooning with joy?
This sounds so crazy, but I love the way Calvin smells. He has a very nice scent, almost like a baby. I think it’s because he shaves his head.
2. In the context of Ineke and Yosh saying how we cannot smell ourselves
come up with a description of your smell. What is your smell is composed of?
I actually think this idea of not being able to smell ourselves in interesting in that I always have told Calvin that I love the way he smells, but that I could not explain why. He always asks me - what does it smell like? I was like, I have no idea, it just smells good! As for me, I think I smell girly - whatever that means. Calvin says I smell like ‘girly.’ It’s a mix of florals and fresh scents.
3. Describe a memorable experience you have had as a consumer associated with scent.
Not sure if this is memorable or not, but every single time I go shopping with my mom she insists on spraying all the latest fragrances on herself. By the 5th bottle I am literaly gagging because of all the smell. I think her sense of “over-doing-it” has been cancelled over the years due to too much spraying!
My sense of hearing is fine. The only thing is, I have an auditory learning disability. It’s interesting to me, it’s not about the hearing itself, it’s about the way my brain processes the information that I hear. Growing up people thought I had ADHD or something because I had trouble concentrating. Then by the time I got to high school, where grades really matter, my grades began to slip. After years of my mom trusting school people to know what was wrong with me, and making me go to (stupid) therapy sessions, she had an external psychologist test me out. He was an expert in learning disabilities and diagnosed me. He gave me ways of note taking, and ways to maximize my skills, rather than suffer through. I became a very successful student after that. From time to time, however, I have my days where I really feel like everything I hear goes in one ear and out the other - literaly.
I love taking landscape and environment shots when I travel. Here are a few I pulled, taken last year. I really get a sense of how I felt when I was there when I look at these photos. Living in LA, and growing up in San Diego, my relationship with varying weather is really strong. When it’s cold, it’s cold. When places look desolate, they are desolate.
Ever since I started flying all over for work, I’ve been obsessed with the views from my window seat. I stare for hours, amazed at the views; they never get old to me. Here is just a “taste…”
1. What is your chromatic history?
In elementary school I was obsessed with Red, I even painted a wall in my room red. In middle school I was obsessed with wearing funky colored socks - everyone knew about my sox. High school, it was cool to wear a lot of denim and school colors. Now a days, I wear black almost everyday. My grandma says it’s not lady like. Growing up my mom was not allowed to own anything black. Times have changed!
2. What is your visual guilty pleasure?
Oceans and beaches!!
3. What is your favorite color this year?
Pink, orange, green, and yellow. And by year, I mean through to next summer - these are the colors of my wedding and they make me excited!
4. Describe the color(s) of your skin?
In between white and black with speckles (that are also somewhere between white and black, but darker than the rest).
